Splatoon Game Review - Not Just a Typical Shooter Game

1-1

When we hear the word Nintendo, the first thing that comes to mind is the stout Italian plumber who saved the princess. We might also think of a grumpy gorilla, or a green-clad elf boy with a sword. We will not think about the game genre shooter that installs children as the main protagonists.

Introducing Splatoon, Nintendo’s new game franchise that looks very tempting. Despite choosing a cartoonish style and installing graphics that at first glance seem very childish, Splatoon has deep gameplay mechanics that are disguised by the vibrant colors that ooze throughout the game. Is this game going to be the next Nintendo success talisman?

Splantoon is not just a typical shooter game

Basically, Splatoon is a game where the point is to shoot paint everywhere with the aim of covering the widest possible surface before the enemy team overtakes us. No wonder, his world will be filled with striking colors. The colors that make it unique so it’s possible to attract fans of Super Mario and Donkey Kong. How not? Here you will not only play new games, but also enter into a world developed by the most creative hands in the gaming universe.

When you enter the game’shub, you will seem to be in one corner of the city of Tokyo. From here you can access the Story mode which is played in single-player, and the main mode of Splatoon, which is online multiplayer or also known as Turf War. Every time you start the game, you will be here while watching other gamers in the character packs he created hanging around each other and you can talk to. In addition there is also a pair of sisters called Squid Sisters who provide updates every time the game will be launched.

If you play Splatoon online, you will get currency that can be exchanged for new costumes or weapons. The new costume that you choose will not only make the character look different, but also provide certain advantages. The good news is, Splatoon is going to be even more fun to play.

As mentioned earlier, the gameplay that is carried in Splatoon can be said to be simple. The point is you have to shoot paint so that it can cover the floor surface. Once you’ve covered floors and walls with paint, you can slide through the paint like a squid or squid. Just like most games made by Nintendo, Splatoon is very simple. That’s the fun!

Easy to play, hard to master

But simple does not mean mediocre. Splatoon is easy to play, but hard to master. The most basic scenario in Splatoon is indeed to cover the floor surface of the battle area as large as possible before the 3 minutes provided expires. The battles take place in six different areas that each have their own characteristics. But painting a surface or wall is also not as easy as one might think.

After you turn into a squid, at the end of the match a cat who is the judge will calculate the area you control and determine the winner. Splatoon does sound weird but it’s ridiculous: kids who turn into squids, paint sprays all over the place, and a cat that decides your win.

There are various tools for spraying paint ink. For example, a splatroller that can spray color widely, changing it a little then the power of the spray will change like a firearm. Some other additional weapons that you can use include the Splash Wall or Sprinkler. Unfortunately, Splatoon doesn’t support voice chat, so you’ll have a hard time coordinating with your friends.

To further change the character in Splatoon, you can shop for various accessories. Each item provided has its own function or use that can be useful for use during battle, such as a sporty hat that can increase your speed when running. The higher the level you play, the higher the ability of each gear that you can use to play.

Is the offline mode as good as the online mode?

As explained earlier, in addition to the online mode, Splatoon also provides an offline mode that allows you to play solo. The time you need to complete this mode is approximately six hours with various variations of the game and the bosses you have to face. The levels that you will face in this mode are packaged thematically. This means that you will get a lot of different worlds, such as a world that uses a slide or a world with a foam-like surface.

In each world you face, you’ll meet Octarian, an enemy who looks just as good as our protagonist. For example, take a look at Octostamps who move so beautifully before making an attack. So, the offline mode provided by Nintendo for Splatoon is just as good as the online multiplayer mode.

7-1

The first level offline mode, Battle Dojo, presents an easy challenge for you to do: shoot more balloons than your rivals. To add to the fun of the game, the power ups you choose will have random abilities so you can’t predict whether your game will run smoothly or even get worse. Moments are fun, but the fact that the winner of the match is chosen at random also makes this session a bit annoying.

Additional Splatoon Amiibo challenges that you can unlock, providing additional weapons in the form of alternative weapons that you can use, such as the Splatroller or Splatcharger. Inevitably, these changes can affect the way you play and the progress that has taken place during the single-player mode.
