League of Legends Game Reaches 100 Million Active Players Monthly
Polygon recently interviewed the executives of Riot Game, namely Marc “Tryndamere” Merill and Brandon “Ryze” Beck, saying that the League of Legends game is played by 100 million active players/accounts per month. Of course, the growth rate is extraordinary.
In 2012, Forbes daily reported that there were 32 million players who actively played LoL every month. The last time Riot Game released its player data was in January 2014, Forbes reported that there were 67 million active players playing LoL games per month and 27 million active players playing every day.
From this growth, we can see that every year there is an increase of 33 percent until now. For comparison, we take the popular game DOTA 2, in June 2016 there were only 13 million active players per month. Similarly, compared to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which only recorded 9.8 million active players per month, this figure is far from LoL games.
The popular game World of Warcraft also can’t get close to LoL’s revenue figures, peaking in 2011 WoW games are only played by 12 million active players per month. The number of WoW players continues to decline, and last recorded in November 2015 there were only 5.5 million active users per month because Blizzard as the game maker has not released the latest update yet.
Actually, there is still something that can compete with the popularity of the LoL game, namely the Solitaire game which is claimed by Microsoft to reach 100 million ‘unique users’. However, Riot Games need not worry, because Solitaire is usually played by people to fill their spare time, not a competitive game to be competed in.
