The X button on the PlayStation is not called 'X', but 'Cross'
The PlayStation UK Twitter account caused quite a stir when they tweeted that the ‘X’ button on the PlayStation controller was actually called ‘cross’, not ‘X’. Of course this leaves a lot of people wondering, because basically saying ‘X’ for the ‘X’ button is much easier than having to say ‘cross’. Moreover, of all the guides created, by and large all say ‘X’ and only the other buttons are pronounced by their name: triangle, square, circle.
People call ‘X’ because the button has an image like the letter X. Even controllers from other consoles, namely Xbox and Nintendo, both refer to the X button as ‘X’.

Even though PlayStation UK says that the ‘X’ button is called ‘cross’ and not ‘X’, that doesn’t change the long-established pronunciation. It’s not easy to change ‘X’ to ‘cross’ even though that’s the proper mention of the ‘X’ button.
But the question is, is this a sign that later the ‘X’ button on the PlayStation 5 controller will change? If indeed the PlayStation controller will change in the next series or on the PlayStation 5, then this is a big challenge for Sony because they have changed what has become the value of their console. The PlayStation 5 itself is rumored to be released at the end of this year or early next year in February 2021.
