How to Shorten URLs with Bitly

Shortening links is usually done to make it easier for someone to share the original URL that he wants to share.

For example, I want to share the URL “https://androbuntu.com/2021/07/15/cara-use-incognito-mode-in-google-chrome-pc-android/” on social media.

If you see, the URL is so long that it will be unsightly if it is directly shared on social media.

So I need to shorten it first.

By shortening the URL, the URL will look more attractive when I share it on social media and not too long.

By the way, there are tons of websites that we can use to shorten URLs, some of them are:

Bitly
TinyURL
Rebrandly
Tiny.cc
And others

In this tutorial I will use the Bitly website.

How to Shorten URLs with Bitly

Bitly is one of the most popular URL shortening websites.

It is evident from many large companies that use bitly when they want to share a link on social media.

So, you can follow the steps below:

1. Open the web page for which you want to shorten the URL. Then copy the URL. Can with right click > Copy, or by shortcut CRTL + C.

2. Once copied, open a new tab in your browser and then visit bitly.com. Login using your account, or register if you don’t have one. On the dashboard page, click the orange button that says CREATE.

3. Paste the URL that you already copied into the Androbuntu Friend column PASTE LONG URLs. Then click the button CREATE or wait a few seconds until the URL is generated into a short URL.

4. After that, a much shorter bitly version of the URL will appear. You can copy the URL and share it on social media, websites, blogs or wherever you want.
