3 Best Point Guard Candidates For Clippers and Kawhi

Los Angeles Clippers really need a point guard and according to Stephen A. Smith of ESPN Kawhi asked directly with the Clippers and now there are 3 best point guard candidates for the Clippers and Kawhi.

The team that previously put Patrick Beverley in the point guard position for most of the 2019-20 season, but that seems less than optimal.

The Clippers are under a lot of pressure this offseason to step up the team after they led the series 3-1 to the Denver Nuggets in the second round of the 2020 playoffs at Walt Disney World.

The following are the three point guard candidates for the Clippers:

1. DJ Augustin – Orlando Magic

DJ Augustin will be an unlimited free agent this season. He also played with Paul George at the Indiana Pacers in 2012-13, so George knows first-hand what the veteran guard can bring.

With Magic in 2019-20, Augustin appeared in 57 matches. He averaged 10.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists with a percentage shoot of 39.9% from the field, 34.8% from outside the arc and 89.0% from the free throw line.

Although Augustin is not a scorer, he is a midrange shooter and 3 points. The Texas native recorded a career shooting 37.9% from outside the arc.

The Clippers who commit their foul through Kawhi and George, can have Augustin looking over the perimeter when Kawhi and George are double-teamed.

Augustin is also a good passer, as he averaged 4.0 assists per game for his career. Clippers must contact the DJ agent as soon as the 2020 free agency period opens.

2. Rajon Rondo – Lakers

Rajon Rondo is expected to reject the 2020-21 season player option with the Los Angeles Lakers and become a free agent. Nothing would piss off the Lakers more than the Clippers who stole Rondo from them.

Rondo was the ideal point guard Kawhi was looking for, in six games without a contribution from Rondo, who provided 19 points and 4 assists in Game 6 in 30 minutes per game.

While shooting 72.7% from the field and 75.0% from 3 points shoot. Over the years, Rondo has increased his 3 point shoots.

So the floor space at the Clippers won’t be so bad when the two-time champions are on the pitch alongside Kawhi, George and Ivica Zubac.

Kawhi and PG have never played with elite passers like Rondo, who is one of the best point guards of his generation.

With that said, the Clippers must exhaust all options to try and snatch Rondo from LeBron James and make the competition between the Lakers and the Clippers even more interesting.

3. Derrick Rose – Pistons

The Clippers could have traded Derrick Rose at the 2020 trade deadline, but the Detroit Pistons are looking for a first round pick in exchange for the former MVP and the Clippers have no control over taking their own first round until 2027.

Rose has a year left on his contract with the Pistons, so the Clippers will have to hit the Chicago man this offseason if they really want him.

In 2019-20, Rose averaged 18.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 50 matches, percentage shoots 49.0% from the field, 30.6% from outside the arc and 87.1% from free throw line.

He could be the Clippers’ third option behind Kawhi and George and took some offensive pressure from the two All-Stars in the fourth quarter as he is a proven one-on-one scorer.

In Game 6 against the Nuggets, neither Kawhi nor George did a scorer in the fourth quarter, as the two California natives prepared for a jump shoot.

Not only that he is known as a good mid-range shooter and is still one of the best on the rim despite undergoing four knee surgeries since winning the MVP award in 2011 with the Chicago Bulls.
