Activision Blizzard Will Close Branch Office in France

Activision Blizzard Inc. Known as one of the world’s largest gaming companies, it is reportedly closing its French branch in the city of Versailles, according to Bloomberg.

The Blizzard company has been acquired by a number of groups since its founding in 1991. However, in 1998, the studio became part of the French media conglomerate Vivendi Games. Since the acquisition, Blizzard’s development has grown rapidly and has been able to release big-name games. Some of them are StarCraft, World of Warcraft, and Diablo II which has made billions of dollars. For this reason, the French country office is an important part of Blizzard’s corporate history.

The office has around 400 employees since the start of 2019, and handles matters in the areas of marketing, customer support, as well as translating languages and other functions related to Activision Blizzard games in Europe.

Initially, they planned to relocate most of their offices to the city of London. However, due to Brexit reasons and the COVID-19 pandemic, the plan was cancelled.

For now, it is not known how many employees will be laid off. Further information will be announced next week.

“For the past few years, we have been trying to explore the best options for integrating our capabilities across all parts of the business. This allows us to make better use of talent, expertise and scale as we adapt to the needs of the highly competitive and rapidly evolving digital industry,” said a statement from Blizzard.

Previously in 2019, Blizzard also had to carry out massive layoffs in the administrative field, in order to offset costs in order to increase the number of employees on the development side. A total of 134 of the 400 employees at the Versailles branch office were laid off.

Under French labor law, every laid-off employee is required to get a compensation package with a sizeable amount. Of course, Blizzard is trying to negotiate the amount of severance pay that must be given, so some employees have to wait months before they are officially laid off.

Based on a report from Bloomberg, in August, Blizzard employees in the United States shared the amount of salary they received and demanded better treatment from the company.
