Game Review Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - The last gift from Hideo Kojima is...awesome!!
There is only one word that is suitable to describe Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, namely: excellent. As his last Metal Gear Solid game, Hideo Kojima puts all his effort into creating the perfect game. And his hard work so far has paid off because almost all of the game elements (perhaps even all of them) in MGS V feel very solid, so it’s no exaggeration if The Phantom Pain has been named the best Metal Gear Solid game!!
A Solid Performance
Although it was doubted by gamers because it displayed a different game form, mainly because of the open world mechanism it used, Ground Zeroes managed to break all negative views through its solid gameplay. But unexpectedly, The Phantom Pain takes this style of play to a much higher level!! Through a very wide game world, gamers can find many ways that can be used to complete each mission, whether it’s using a frontal attack method or using stealth tactics. And amazingly, the developer is able to provide a solid “means” for both methods so that it can be carried out smoothly without any shortcomings.
One of the interesting features included in the game is Reflex Mode, where time will move slowly for a few seconds, giving you the opportunity to take down enemies who detect your presence before they call for help. And the fun thing is, it applies to ALL types of enemies!! The presence of this feature is clearly very useful considering how large the game area is in The Phantom Pain, where the possibility to meet enemies in unexpected places can occur. For those who think that Reflex Mode is too “cheat”, or who want to look for more challenges, don’t worry because this feature can be turned on or off at any time.
Weapon modification is also a feature that really supports the open world game mechanism in The Phantom Pain, because the war scenario can change at any time. Tinkering with your weapons can be an exciting activity, because each customization not only provides new abilities but also has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, the AM MRS-4 Rifle can be given a grenade launcher attachment but add more weight, or increase its attack range at the risk of being difficult to use in tight spaces. Oh, don’t forget the Fulton Recovery System where you can send various things to your base, which will take us to the next interesting part which is…
Build Your Own Army!!
Yup, The Phantom Pain provides an opportunity for gamers to create their own army, according to the lore where Venom Snake – later to become the Big Boss – controls a large fleet. Later, all personnel that you send to Mother Base (besides objects, animals to vehicles) become your troops. The fun thing is, they can be trained and assigned to various different divisions according to the skills possessed by each individual; starting from Research and Development (R&D), Intel, Medical, Support, Combat Unit, to Base Development. By increasing the level of the staff in each division, the greater the benefits that you can get later.
Indeed, what are the advantages of having a Mother Base? Make no mistake; your base has an equally important role in ensuring Snake’s success when carrying out each mission. For example, the higher the level of R&D staff, the more new equipment you can use in battle, while Intel can provide more information about resources that can be obtained in the map being played. The division that (according to the author) is the most important is the Combat Unit, where you can send your troops as mercenaries to carry out various side-missions to earn money – the main resource that has a big role in this game!!
Managing Mother Base can be an interesting activity outside of warfare to run, it might even take up most of your time if you like games that feature micro management. In addition, gamers can do many interesting activities (even silly ones!!) such as training them, looking for Diamonds, visiting places where your sent animals are kept, and much more. In essence, Mother Base is a place where you can release tension after a tiring battle, so that we can carry out our next task well.
Beyond the Gameplay
Not only featuring exciting and challenging gameplay, the presence of other quality supporting features is an added value for The Phantom Pain. Starting from the dark but interesting storyline because it is decorated with various intrigues, steady voice acting that is able to “turn on” each character, and much more. You gotta have to try it for yourself… it’s really addicting!!
