Josh Whedon to be Director, Screenwriter and Producer of Batgirl
Josh Whedon (Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) swerved from a Marvel movie to a DC superhero film project, Batgirl who will enter the world of the DCEU. According to Variety, Whedon will not only direct the project but will also serve as producer and scriptwriter.
Whedon is already known as a film director Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron for Marvel Studios and he is also the co-creator of the series Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. It’s also a bit surprising when he “move” to competitors Marvel, DC and Warner Bros.
Batgirl is set to enter the DC Extended Universe along with Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman, The Batman and Gotham City Sirens. There is no further information about this project other than Toby Emmerich, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns who will be in charge.
Batgirl first appeared in 1967 as Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner James Gordon, and later she became an ally of Batman and Robin in Gotham City. But before that the character “Bat-Girl” was introduced first to the comics Batman #139 (April 1961) with the alter ego Betty Kane by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff.
Batgirl previously appeared on the small screen in the Batman series in the 60s, played by Yvonne Craig. Then appeared on the big screen with Alicia Silverstone (as Barbara Wilson) in 1997 in Batman & Robin. Batgirl also just appeared in The LEGO Batman Movie with the voice of Rosario Dawson.
