Long time without news, Nexon's Final Fantasy XI Mobile is officially canceled

Final Fantasy XI’s debut as the oldest active MMORPG game continues to provide hope for Square Enix to increase its popularity. In addition to the new update, in 2015 they also announced a “reboot” game project with Nexon which was specifically for the mobile platform. The project itself looks very interesting and quite ambitious, it’s just that because of the long absence of new information, its existence has slowly been forgotten by many enthusiastic fans.

This silence was finally broken yesterday which unfortunately came with unpleasant news, namely confirmation that Final Fantasy XI Reboot has been officially cancelled. This announcement is quoted from the media Gamebiz.jp which received confirmation directly from Nexon through its collaboration with Square Enix, which they had to make this tough decision after pursuing a development project for several years and met many dead ends.

Regarding the reason for the cancellation itself, it was reported that Nexon and Square Enix did not succeed in concocting the game to meet the quality standards expected by Final Fantasy fans. The two then canceled the game and relocated all the staff to work on other projects.

This reason is actually a bit one-sided, because after all the game still hasn’t opened the Closed Beta stage and gives players a chance to taste it. So it could be that the quality that does not meet these standards actually matches what the fans want. Even if the game does not offer the quality as expected, the developer can try to get as much feedback as possible from the players before it is ready to release the game on the market.

It’s really unfortunate news, but in the end maybe this is the right decision too, especially considering how the game has entered a long development period and was even planned for release in 2016. If this long-term development ends with a truly poor quality game, then the only option is to cancel it.
