Minions Creators Working on Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Chris Meledandri as founder of Illumination Entertainment, the studio that created the series Despicable Me and Minions, reportedly working on an animated film Super Mario Bros. In an interview with Variety, he said that the film project is in “priority development” status, and is ready to be released to the market in 2022. One of Nintendo’s top executives, Shigeru Miyamoto, is rumored to be intensively involved in making this film.

In response to Miyamoto’s involvement in the film project Super Mario Bros., Meledandri commented “We positioned him at the center of the development of this film. I rarely see that done in film adaptations, where the opinion of the original creator counts as we did with Miyamoto. There are many stories in Hollywood about people who believe they know better than those responsible for creating a property. And I’ve made that mistake before.”

Released in 1985, Super Mario Bros. is games genre platformer released on the NES console. The story focuses on two plumber brothers, Mario and Luigi, who are trying to save Princess Toadstool from the hands of the evil Bowser. Its high popularity makes games it was briefly adapted to the big screen in 1993, pairing Bob Hopkins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi. Unfortunately, the film was considered a failed project.

Responding to the challenge of adapting a project that was previously unsuccessful, Meledandri admitted that he was relieved that his first film was not a success. “I thought it would be more interesting or more worthy, than making another version of the film that was successful.”

Besides Super Mario Bros., Illumination Entertainment also has a number of other projects in the works, and they are all in the form of sequel. Among others are The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019), Minions 2 (2020) as well as Sing 2 (2020). [Aseek]
