Moonton and Mobile Legends Acquired by TikTok Developer Bytedance

Chinese technology company and TikTok owner, ByteDance, has reportedly acquired Shanghai Moonton Technology, the developer and publisher of Mobile Legends Bang Bang. The acquisition, believed to be worth around $4 billion, was made by Nuverse, ByteDance’s video game division. Well, Bytedance has become a successful tech company with the Tik-Tok app.

According to a Reuters source, Moonton CEO Yuan Jing has provided an internal memo that the company will operate as an independent entity from ByteDance if this acquisition is final.

Jing Yuan, co-founder and CEO of publisher Moonton announced on Monday that the company has been acquired by NUVERSE, the gaming business division of Chinese technology TikTok and Douyin ByteDance. Yuan said Moonton would cooperate with ByteDance in expanding the game market overseas, but remained an independent developer. Yuan will also remain in his position as CEO of the company.

Welcoming this acquisition, ByteDance said in a statement: “Through cross-team collaboration and leveraging the experience and insights from its rapid growth, Moonton is providing Nuverse with the strategic support needed to accelerate global gaming offerings.”
Nuverse is part of Bytedance which was founded in 2019 and has published titles such as Strike Royale, Eden no Tobira, and Arena of Evolution: Red Tides.

Reuters news agency reported that another Chinese tech giant, Tencent, also made a bid to acquire Moonton, but that bid was matched by ByteDance last week.

Moonton is increasingly recognized worldwide as the publisher of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang franchise. This mobile MOBA game has experienced a rapid surge in popularity in recent years. MLBB has become the busiest competitive esports scene, especially in the Southeast Asia region and reached its peak at the M2 event in January earlier this year. The Mobile Legends world championship was witnessed by more than 600,000 live.

Esports Charts recorded the M2 2020 World Championship Grand Final between Burmese Ghouls vs Bren Esports was watched more than 3 million times. This grand event is also supported by a series of global sponsor brands such as Samsung, Razer, Secretlab, and Singtel who have partnered with the Mobile Legends esports competition.

Of course, many are waiting for news developments regarding the Moonton acquisition process by Bytedance and are starting to guess how it will affect the Mobile Legends game: Bang Bang. With Bytedance’s success in raising TikTok to become a universal application, it seems that MLBB will continue to innovate to become a prestigious esports title and expand its already solid reach in the Southeast Asia region, perhaps to Central Asia, Europe, America and others.
