Recent Research Concludes Violent Games Don't Cause Anti-Social and Aggressive Behavior

You have often heard news about criminal acts that are often motivated by the habits of perpetrators who are influenced by violent games. And the game that is most often dragged into this news is Grand Theft Auto. Recently, a team of researchers from Germany revealed the results of their research on the correlation between playing violent games with anti-social and aggressive behavior.

In their research, the research team used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine the brains of gamers. The participants selected were those who had a history of playing games for at least 2 hours every day for the last 4 years. In the study, they found that gamers who had been playing the game for a long time had the same neural response as non-gamers when viewing violent images.

All of the participants involved were men. They were forbidden to play games 3 hours before the experiment was conducted. This is so that the answers of the volunteers are not directly affected by the game. During the experiment, the participants were asked how they would feel if they were in a situation depicted in the violent pictures shown. When giving answers, the brains of these gamers are then scanned using an fMRI tool. Their answers will then be compared with non-gamers’ answers.

“We hope that this study will encourage other research groups to focus their attention on the long-term effects of video games on human behavior,” said Dr. Gregor Szycik as the leader of the research.
