Esports will be present as a 2021 SEA Games Branch

After previously being doubtful of attending the 2021 SEA Games, esports was finally announced as one of the branches that would be competed in the biennial event. The organizers were previously not interested in competing in the esports branch which was planned to be held at the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam later. However, Razer finally managed to convince the organizers to present an esports branch.

Previously, the esports branch was successfully competed in the 2021 SEA Games in the Philippines. A total of six games are contested in the biggest sporting event in Southeast Asia. The six games are Dota 2, Starcraft 2, Hearthstone, Tekken 7, Arena of Valor, and Mobile Legends. The Philippines emerged as the champion with 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals.

The Southeast Asia Games Federation Executive Committee as the organizer is likely to make an official announcement in November. Currently, there are 36 official sports that will be competed, the remaining 4 will be announced in the future. The four sports are esports, triathlon, bowling, and jiu-jitsu.

After it was officially announced that it would be included in the upcoming 2021 SEA Games, the organizers would then determine which games to compete in. Each country can send 1 team/representative in every game that is contested. With the existence of esports in the SEA Games sporting event, this further signifies the development of esports in Southeast Asia.
