Failed to Deal With Microsoft, Discord Considers IPO

One month ago, the world’s number one VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) application Discord was rumored to be being acquired by Microsoft. The value of money offered is not small, which is around USD 10 billion, higher than the value of the ZeniMax acquisition by Microsoft a few months ago. Besides Microsoft, Amazon and the Epic Games Store are several other giant companies that are also interested in acquiring Discord. The ease of using the application and the clear voice of his voice chat makes Discord very popular, especially in the gamer community and video game content providers.

But today there is the latest information from the Wall Street Journal, that Discord is not being acquired by Microsoft. The discussions that took months ended in not finding an agreement between the two parties. But in the future it is possible that discussions of the acquisition could be revived, according to reliable sources.

With this Discord has a new focus, namely considering doing an IPO (Initial Public Offering) rather than being acquired exclusively. Discord’s initial step was to recruit Tomasz Marcinkowski as finance director, who was previously co-director of the Pinterest app.

If it succeeds in acquiring Discord, Microsoft will further expand its presence in the world of social media besides LinkedIn which is also its own. In 2021 they bought the Mixer livestream platform service in order to compete with the dominance of Twitch and YouTube Gaming. However, after a year of running Mixer did not reach the expected target, even though it has hooked several well-known video game streamers such as Ninja and Shroud. At the end of July 2021, Microsoft finally shut down Mixer, shifting its focus to the Xbox division’s cloud gaming service.

Will Discord’s IPO move take place, or are they still discussing with other companies whether to be acquired? Or will Microsoft offer a new, more attractive model to successfully acquire Discord?
