8 German Professional Football Clubs Will Dive into the World of eSports
German media WirtschaftsWoche reported that 8 German professional football clubs such as Borussia Mönchengladbach, Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen, FC Ingolstadt, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Cologne, and Hertha BC are considering forming an esports division.
Bayern Munich’s digital director Stefan Mennerich said their organization “is closely watching the development of the esports sector at the moment”. Meanwhile, Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Head of Digital Development Andreas Cuppers also voiced the same thing.
Football club Borussia Dortmund said it would be a little strange to invest in esports outside of the soccer game FIFA 17, but in reality the popular competitive games that are commonly played have nothing to do with sports like League of Legend and DOTA 2.
Even though we know that there are already several football clubs that have recruited competitive game players outside of FIFA 17, for example FC Schalke and Galatasaray who formed the League of Legends esports team. Of the 8 clubs mentioned above, for now, they have not officially confirmed or denied the rumors circulating, if there are more and more football clubs in the esports division, it is not impossible that we will see Overwatch, DOTA 2 or LoL tournaments between football clubs.
