A Complete Explanation of Why #BoycottGenshinImpact is Trending on Twitter

Not long ago, the Genshin Impact community was again shocked by a new drama that was quite disturbing on Twitter. In just a short time, the calls of #dobettermihoyo and #boycottgenshin became trending on the social media platform. The initial source itself started from discussions to criticism about the way the game represented various races, which eventually continued to develop into more and more criticisms which made the situation even more heated.

One of the Twitter users who started the trending of the hashtag was venluvr, which yesterday released a short video of the footage of miHoYo’s studio tour in Shanghai. In the video there is a 3D artist who uses reference sources from the American outback tribes to create the monster race we know in the game called Hilichurl. The response to this post was divided from the camps who felt this complaint was too exaggerated and deliberately made to spark controversy, but not a few who even added new complaints that were increasingly unreasonable.

With the spread of the hashtag, other new complaints that attracted attention also emerged from the representation of black characters such as Xinyan and Kaeya who were considered unfavorable. First, Xinyan’s background in Genshin is seen as an intimidating character, so many people think that this gives the impression that black people are terrible. Meanwhile, Kaeya, who also has dark skin, is described in the game with the word “exotic”, which is thought to make her character look bad due to cultural or racial differences.

There were also complaints about how an NPC named Ulfr said that he wanted to express his love for Flora, who was known in the game as a child NPC figure. Some players feel uncomfortable with this pedophile impression, at least until a user explains that in the Closed Beta game Flora is an adult female figure. It’s just that there is a possibility that miHoYo did not check carefully in the dialogue reference section which ended up being the subject of debate like this.

Despite all the criticisms that keep popping up on Twitter, not a few are also defending miHoYo by providing their own explanations. In the case of Xinyan, she may be viewed as intimidating because of her character traits that are similar to those of a punk rocker, especially from her design that looks quite wild. While the description of “exotic” for Kaeya is a translational error of the Chinese version, the real purpose of which is to portray her as a character originating from Khaenri’ah is a region other than Teyvat.

Giving a response to the existing controversy will always bring a different response, but in our opinion this is indeed an exaggeration. The reason itself is because attracting or making the slightest complaint from games, movies, or other works is not a difficult thing. As long as there is something that can be used as a material for new controversy, there will always be some camps that will do it in order to tarnish the name of a work.

So what do you think about the current controversy? Is the impression normal or is it too much?
