Epic Games Sacrifice More than 6 Trillion Funds to Compete with Steam

Debuting as a new marketplace platform with ambitions to compete with Steam, it must be admitted that the Epic Games Store has indeed brought quite an effective competition so far. Apart from securing the exclusive rights of the many new game releases, they also often open massive discount periods and give out free games every week. So far, their strategy has succeeded in bringing in new users who have also switched to the platform, but Epic Games also had to bear huge costs to get to that point.

Through the latest report of the legal battle between Epic and Apple, there is new interesting information that is now known to the public. The most interesting information is the fact that Epic has spent up to USD 444 million or around IDR 6.6 trillion more to secure the exclusivity of the game, and this has only been calculated for 2020 yesterday.

All the games that are included in the “loss” count come from games that were only released on the Epic Game Store and haven’t been on Steam for at least a year. Epic also provides a special kind of guarantee that is set aside to developers if their game doesn’t sell well, so no one really feels aggrieved except for Epic itself, who happens to have no objections and sees it as an investment.

So even though in the end Epic didn’t get a return on their platform, at least all of this massive investment worked quite effectively and brought hundreds of millions of new users to their platform. This also shows that they will not stop to continue implementing the same strategy for years to come.

Apart from securing the exclusive rights of new game releases, massive discounts and free game sharing will also be automatically maintained. It will be very interesting, of course, to see how their position will be in 2022, will they start making profits or end up burning even more money?
