[First Impression] Apex Legends Legacy, New Season with Bombastic Fun!
Maintaining its existence as one of the most consistent battle royale games on the market, Apex Legends deserves praise. Although before its debut, this game had some doubts, especially from the role of Electronic Arts as a publisher, it turns out that this game managed to answer all doubts with solid quality. Two years have passed and finally Apex Legends is ready to open a new chapter in its ninth season, which is named Legacy.
We happened to have the opportunity to join a virtual event with developer Respawn Entertainment a few days ago. In this event, we were given the opportunity to interview the development team and try out Apex Legends Legacy directly with fellow journalists from other media. In this article, we will provide further details of the latest hands-on content in its ninth season. Instead of being curious, just look at the summary below.
Additional 3v3 Arena Mode
One of the main content that is the center of attention from the Legacy update this time is the addition of the 3v3 Arena mode. The game sessions we got in Arena mode were only obtained from two games in 2 randomly selected maps, namely “Party Crasher” and “Phase Runner”. Before starting the game, there is an option to invite friends to join, although the matchmaking process will still be randomized. The development team through the interview session happened to be considering adding a custom room system in the future to give more freedom.
After choosing which Legend we will play, the match finally begins and each team has the task of winning three rounds ahead of the opponent. He said there would be some kind of Showdown moment that occurred when the match reached nine points, but from our game session we didn’t trigger this moment. If you imagine this is similar to most last-second or decisive moments in various competitive games, a rough example might be Sudden Death in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Each round of the match you will be given a share in the form of currency to buy weapons, materials and other equipment needed to face the opposing team. Every weapon you have can be upgraded including the option to add stock medkits, grenades, and shields which are very crucial to strengthen your character. Different from the usual Battle Royale mode, in Arena mode the character’s abilities or skills are also limited and can only be unlocked with a separate option to buy them. So there is a more strategic approach to the gameplay concept to prepare for each match.
The newest map in Arena mode is also very exciting, with lots of spots to protect yourself as well as strategic places to get a safe shot at the enemy. But this map can also be used by players who rely on snipers, because there are moments where we have to find the best position to counter/counterattack. The course of each match is really filled with non-stop action that demands full focus with small mistakes that can make you a burden on the team. There were many moments where our characters died because the atmosphere of the battle was very chaotic.
Valkyrie, the Elegant and Awesome New Legend
Another new content that is also the focus of this Legacy update is a new Legend called Valkyrie and we are satisfied with the character. Valkyrie reminds us of Pharah from the game Overwatch, where both of them can use a jetpack and need their own timing in order to maintain their position in the air. Just like other Legend characters, Valkyrie abilities in Arena mode are also limited by skills that can be purchased separately.
Valkyrie’s ultimate skill allows him to carry both teammates and fly high into the air. After reaching the jump point, he can jump like he just entered the battlefield at the beginning of the usual Battle Royale match mode. This is certainly a very useful ability to save teammates from ambush or danger that can wipe out your entire team.
In addition to these various abilities, Valkyrie is also equipped with passive skills that are active when skydive. So when plunging, the Valkyrie can mark the position of enemies that fall within its line of sight, which teammates can also see. This skill is practically similar to Crypto’s Neurolink.
Bocek Bow for Reliable Players
During the course of Arena mode you can also get loot in the form of a Bocek Bow. It’s just that we didn’t get a chance to get the weapon. But from the description described this weapon has a very high damage output and can finish off enemies quickly, but the attack distance is not that far and the delay of each shot makes it more suitable for veteran players to use.
The name Bocek itself is taken directly from the weapon designer named David Bocek. This weapon can be obtained from the new “Marksman” category along with the G7 Scout and Triple Take. As can be seen, this weapon uses arrows as its main bullet with a maximum bullet capacity of 16 that it can carry (at least after we tried it in Firing Range).
The following are various attachments for the Bocek Bow:
- 1x HCOG
- 2x HCOG
- 1x Holo
- 2-4x Variable Holo
- 3x HCOG ‘Ranger’
Meanwhile, the hop-up that can be used is Deadeye’s Tempo, which can also be used in Sentinel to increase the fire rate of his arrows as an effective DPS weapon. If your arrows aren’t on target or miss, Shatter Caps can also help Bocek Bows break shots in various directions and make them feel like a shotgun cumpound.
Olympus Map Latest Update
The Olympus map also gets a new overhaul that adds to the fun of playing in Apex Legends Legacy. The developer seems to be trying to add more Points of Interest (POI) to Olympus, which can then be used as a foundation for new content in the future. One of the most noticeable changes in the Olympus map is the condition of the environment being infected with wild plants from a fleet called The Icarus that managed to penetrate Psamathe.
When exploring the Olympus map with this new face, players will find a different and more intimidating atmosphere. For example, how there is a scientist’s corpse that can be found, which turns out to also hold a special Key Card to open valuable loot in The Icarus. Some of the other new changes include reducing redeploy balloons and encouraging new rotations in key areas of the map.
How was the experience?
After not playing Apex Legends for a long time, being able to get the opportunity to try out the game again in this latest version is really very fun. All new content starting from the 3v3 Arena mode, the presence of Legend Valkyrie, to changes in the Olympus map managed to bring a more fresh and evocative playing experience. We think both old players and newcomers will immediately feel the clear changes that Apex Legends is trying to bring for each season, and specifically for Legacy we think this could be the best season for some players.
