Had Dimmed, the Number of Dota 2 Players Soared After Diretide was Released
The Diretide game mode was just released by Valve on October 29 to celebrate the Halloween season. The mode that the Dota 2 community has been waiting for for seven years has succeeded in reviving the enthusiasm of the players.
Dota 2 is known as one of the biggest MOBA games in the gaming industry. But since May 2020, the number of players has continued to decline, according to data from Steam Charts. Not only that, the decline in numbers looks quite drastic every month and has almost lost 100k players in total.
This certainly sounds quite surprising considering the record number of TI10 Battle Pass prize pools. However, one of the reasons the prize pool managed to break a record was the extension of its duration. So indirectly, it cannot be used as a reference for the success / popularity of Dota 2.
But this October, on October 30, after the release of the Diretide game mode, the number of Dota 2 players rose again for the first time in five months. At the time of writing, the peak number of players had reached 722,447. Although not comparable to the previous figures, this proves that the Dota 2 community is not dead.

Diretide is a game mode that was released in 2012 and 2013. But since then, this game mode has disappeared and has never been presented again even though players have requested it. Finally after seven years, Valve decided to release it.
Diretide itself has received many positive reviews from the community. Reportedly, this game mode also presents the largest amount of cosmetics in the history of TI Battle Pass.
With the number of players at the time of writing, Dota 2 is the second “top game by number of players” on Steam. Only one rank below Counter Strike: Global Offensive.
Can this MOBA game maintain the number of players? With the postponement of The International and the dimming of the competitive realm of Dota 2, it seems that a lot of negative comments have been made by the community to Valve. Then, the reason why the popularity of Dota 2 has decreased recently.
