Nexon Announces "Friendly" Investments in Bandai Namco, SEGA, Konami, and Hasbro
As one of the largest game publishers from South Korea, Nexon has had to face many challenges over the last few decades. Their reputation cannot be said to be positive, because Nexon is quite well known as a publisher who is not very responsive to their community and often shuts down many online games permanently. Even so, they at least want to continue to contribute to the advancement of the game industry, one of which is by investing in various well-known game companies.
Through press release the latest they shared, Nexon announced that they had invested up to USD 1.5 billion or around IDR 21 trillion more. This investment is aimed at helping game companies develop and support popular gaming IPs on a global scale. Some of the companies that received this investment include Bandai Namco, SEGA, Konami, and Hasbro.
Apart from the four companies above, Nexon has also invested in many other small-scale companies that were not mentioned in their press releases. Owen Mahoney as president and CEO of Nexon commented that game companies that have large IPs are often overlooked in a market that is focused on introducing new franchises. So this investment from Nexon is expected to help these companies support and maintain the popularity of their IP games.
It should also be noted that this investment is “friendly” and has “no acquisition objective”, which means that they only provide financial support and do not intend to make acquisitions to the various companies being assisted.
Despite Nexon’s not-so-good reputation in the gaming community, especially from the one they left behind, it must be admitted that this investment is something that should be appreciated. They want to forge friendly relationships with more gaming companies while investing in genuine support. Hopefully with this in the future Nexon can also become a better publisher and pay more attention to the community.
