Samsung's take on IoT experiences for the convenience of everyday life
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd today at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) presented its vision and strategy for the Internet of Things (IoT) intelligent experience.
During today’s press conference, Samsung demonstrated its unique ability to seamlessly connect consumer experiences across Samsung devices at home, work and on the go. Samsung has been working to make all Samsung products IoT ready by 2020. In addition, the company announced its plans to increase IoT adoption through a consistent, intelligent open platform.
“At Samsung, we believe that IoT should be as easy as turning the palm of the hand. With the new products and services announced today, we are making IoT easier and more hassle-free,” said Hyunsuk (HS) Kim, President, Head of Samsung’s Consumer Electronics Division and Samsung Research. “We are committed to accelerating the adoption of IoT for everyone and smarting all connected Samsung devices by 2020. These upgrades will help consumers benefit from a seamless and easy connected life.”
Intelligence of Things for Everyone
Samsung’s IoT philosophy is built on open innovation, making it accessible to more people and when intelligently enhanced, personalized to each person’s needs. Currently, a fragmented and complex ecosystem is one of the challenges of IoT adoption. To be easier to use and access, IoT requires open computation and innovation. Thanks to a comprehensive product portfolio including TVs, home appliances and smartphone, as well as Samsung’s leadership in 5G connectivity, Samsung is best positioned to deliver an open IoT ecosystem through SmartThings.
Samsung is working with partners such as the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) to set industry standards. The OCF is the world’s largest IoT standardization body and Samsung’s ARTIK chips, air conditioners and Family Hub refrigerators have been certified by the association for how their components interact, as required in IoT technology.
In spring 2018, Samsung will unify its IoT applications, including Samsung Connect, Smart Home, Smart View and more into the SmartThings app to connect and control any SmartThings-connected device directly from your phone, TV or car, through just one application. Additionally, Samsung announced plans to connect HARMAN Ignite to the SmartThings Cloud, moving the IoT experience from the home to the car. As a result, consumers will be able to manage connected appliances at home from the car or vice versa.
An integral part of Samsung’s vision is to make its devices interconnected with increased intelligence. With Bixby, Samsung is bringing personalized smart services to more devices. In 2018, select Samsung Smart TVs and the new Family Hub refrigerators will have voice control via Bixby to make everyday chores easier. Devices with collaborative services and enhanced intelligence make working at home easier.
As increased connectivity requires increased security, Samsung has incorporated its trusted Samsung Knox technology into its connected devices, including Smart TVs, Smart Signages, products mobile add-ons and Smart Appliances. Knox technology includes security system hardware as well as updates firmware to help ensure that all connected devices are protected.

Building a Connected Future
Samsung continues its commitment to investing in technological breakthroughs. In 2017, Samsung disbursed more than $14 billion in research and development. The company is also increasing its investment through Samsung NEXT – a key initiative to accelerate its transformation into an enterprise hardware and software integrated.
Samsung is also building a Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center as part of the consolidation of the Samsung Research unit. AI Center which includes four laboratories in Toronto, Montreal, Cambridge (UK) and Russia in 2018, will partner with Samsung’s ongoing projects in Korea and Silicon Valley and the company’s M&A activities to drive AI ambitions forward.
