1 Out of 4 Millennials Are Familiar With Esports
Gaming data company Newzoo has released a rather surprising report. According to the latest data from Newzoo, 22% of men and 15% of women in the United States between the ages of 21-35 years (the millennial generation) watch an esports match at least once a month.
The report also states that the number of fans watching esports (male) matches is starting to surpass traditional sports such as ice hockey and will soon even surpass baseball. Furthermore, it is said that the total number of viewers who watch esports is 148 million people, and the esports industry this year is worth $493 million.
Of the esports fans surveyed in this report, 76% say that esports is now replacing the time they spend watching traditional sports. This could possibly be a factor in the decline in television viewership for sports, the average NFL (America Football) viewership has declined 11% from last season, with a 13 per cent drop in overall television viewership globally.
With such rapid growth it is not surprising that sports personalities and sports organizations compete to form esports teams, such as basketball player Rick Fox founded Echo Fox, the recent purchase of the Philadelphia 76ers with the acquisition of teams Dignitas and Apex, and French football club Paris Saint. -Germain announced plans to enter esports by buying Team Huma.
“The great interest from sports celebrities, clubs, media companies and brands illustrates how esports will lead the media and entertainment business into a new future,” said Newzoo chairman Pieter van de Heuvel. He further said that esports brings innovation in technology and consumer business models, and has a unique ability to engage actively with the younger generation.
