Is Genshin Impact just a clone of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild?
Genshin Impact was released on various platforms last Monday, and has set various records. Various sources have stated that Genshin Impact is the biggest Chinese game release in the world. In addition, Genshin Impact also achieved the second highest-grossing application in Apple’s App Store, behind only the social media giant, Tiktok.
One of the success factors of Genshin Impact can be shown in its monetization system. Genshin Impact is a game that is 100% free to play on any platform. To make a profit, they have in-game microtransactions in the form of gacha.
With this system, Genshin Impact can attract many players to play it, and the small percentage who buy its microtransactions already gives miHoYo quite a lot of advantages. For gamers who often play games on PC or consoles, it may be difficult to imagine a concept where free games can earn this much profit.
But Genshin Impact wouldn’t be able to get this much attention if the gameplay wasn’t great. Players will spend a lot of their time exploring the world of Teyvat in the open-world area provided by miHoYo, complete with interesting art-styles.
Although there are many more parts of Genshin Impact’s gameplay, it is the parts above that attract the attention of many gamers. This is due to the many similarities the game has, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
This comparison starts from the art-style of these two games which use a cel-shaded style. Even though Breath of the Wild (BotW) is 3 years old, players can see the similarities in its art style to Genshin Impact. After this comparison begins, players immediately see another, namely the stamina bar.
By using the stamina bar in BotW, players can perform various activities such as running, climbing, attacking, and others. Genshin Impact also has many of the same abilities using the stamina bar. Plus the camera position is similar between the two games, and it’s easy to see the similarities. In this article, you can see an example of a comparison between BotW and Genshin Impact in climbing, archery, and paragliding.
The problem is, BotW is not the first game to use the stamina bar system for exploration. However, this game is a game that is very easy for players to remember because of the overall package. It is because of this that the comparisons between these two games appear.
In my opinion, Genshin Impact doesn’t deserve to be considered as a clone of Breath of the Wild because it uses some of the same mechanics. There are still many other mechanics that set the two games apart. What is your opinion?
