NBA Philadelphia 76ers Team, Team Dignitas Acquisition and Apex

For the first time a United States sports organization has tried to dive into the world of esports, no half-hearted American professional basketball team (NBA) namely the Philadelphia 76ers officially acquired 2 esports organizations, namely Team Dignitas and Apex.

Previously there were only former NBA players who invested in esports, they were Rick Fox who founded the Echo Fox team and Shaquille O’Neal who is also one of the owners of NRG eSports. The Philadelphia 76ers (Sixers) kept the amount of shares acquired a secret.

In a statement, the Sixers said that the daily operations of the Dignitas team were fully borne by them, including marketing, sponsorship and players.

There are those who say that the acquisition of an esports team can easily reach sponsorship targets among the age group of 18-34 years. Last year at the NBA Board of Governors meeting, there was a discussion about the significant growth of esports, starting to outperform other traditional sports. This is also what is expected to make the Philadelphia 76ers organization not hesitate to enter the world of esports.

As we all know, the Apex team that competes in the highest League of Legends tournament in North America (League of Legends Championship Series) will operate under the Dignitas team next year.

Although the Dignitas team organization is bigger than Apex, they were relegated in the NA LCS tournament last Spring, therefore Apex was acquired by the Dignitas team in order to continue competing in the LCS tournament. In addition to the League of Legends team, the Dignitas team we know also has a Counter-Strike roster: Global Offensive, Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, and Smite.
