Riot Announces Changes to MSI 2021 Knockout Schedule

A few days before the start of the knockout rounds at the 2021 League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), Riot Games made a schedule change by changing the match days for both semifinal series. The LOL developer and publisher has released a statement explaining the reasons behind the decision.

The decision to change the schedule had to be made in line with the COVID-19 protocol for Royal Never Give Up LPL. While the countries represented in the knockout stage only require a negative PCR test result prior to flight, citizens traveling to China must have an IgM antibody blood test within 48 hours of departure. Two semifinal series have been replaced due to scheduling conflicts.

As a result, RNG needed to visit the lab in Reykjavík for a blood draw on Saturday, May 22, as opposed to their series on that day. Riot has also been looking into alternative flight options for the team that would allow them to maintain the same schedule, but due to the pandemic, there are no other viable options for the team to return to China.

“So, we came here today and listened to the whole process and the logic behind the decision making, so I asked them to make sure that this doesn’t happen again in the future,” DWG KIA head coach kkOma told a press conference. “Now that we have the schedule for the semifinals, we will do our best to prepare for the games to come, and I hope we can reach the final.”

With this change, RNG will face PSG Talon on Friday, 21 May, while DWG KIA Korea will be on the same stage against MAD Lions on Saturday, 22 May. The 2021 MSI Finals will then be played on Sunday, 23 May.
