T1 COO John Kim Dies at 40
John Kim, COO of esports organization T1, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021. Kim breathed his last in hospital after undergoing treatment since July 7 due to health problems.
John Kim started his esports career by founding TSB while still studying at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada. He then moved on to work with the Overwatch Contenders team, Skyfoxes. The team also expressed their condolences and gave testimony about Kim’s role in their history.
In a post released on the League of Legends team’s official Twitter account, T1 announced that Kim was hospitalized on July 7 due to health problems and passed away on Friday, July 16.
John Kim was appointed COO in November 2019 to oversee the organization’s operations and activities. He also helped T1 expand beyond his home country of South Korea and become the global esports brand it is today.
T1 made esports history as the team that won the League of Legends world championship tournament in 2013, 2015 and 2016. T1 also competed in Dota 2, VALORANT, PUBG, Apex Legends, Fortnite, Super Smash Bros and Hearthstone.

John Kim joined T1 in October 2019 and played an important role in building T1. “It is with deep sadness that we share the sad news of the passing of our COO, John Kim,” T1 said in a statement. “After being hospitalized on July 7 due to health problems, John passed away on July 16, 2021.”
“John has been instrumental in building T1, working tirelessly for our players and staff and he will be sorely missed. While we mourn the loss of our dear friend and colleague, we will also continue to celebrate his life and the time we had with him. We are also John’s family as they go through this difficult time.”

Many organizations, leagues and esports figures have expressed their condolences and condolences for Kim’s passing. Gen.G, G2, LCK, journalist Ashley Kang, and several professional T1 players such as Dota 2 player Nuengnara “23Savage” Teeramahanon and Fortnite player Do “Hood.J” Hwan Kim also saluted John Kim on their respective social media accounts. .
One of T1’s creators, Nick “LS” De Cesare, shared his testimony of how much John Kim cares for the T1 staff. “John was a father figure to me at T1,” LS wrote on Twitter. “During November, he was always there to help with the turbulent month. He always helps me without being asked, and I consider him a very dedicated person. I am very lucky to have known him.”
Before falling into power, Kim was working on the transition process for the T1 SKT team which was trying to restore their performance. The League of Legends T1 team fought in the LCK event against Damwon Gaming this weekend.
