Using Google Maps Offline

Embarrassed to ask no longer lost on the road because there is a Google Map. The presence of Google Map is an oasis for Android users who don’t know the way home, get lost on the road, or are confused about finding the (real) address. However, its presence becomes useless if in the middle of the road when you search for a certain address, the data packet runs out. Fortunately, there is a way to use this app offline.
It is currently possible for you to use Google Maps offline so you will still enjoy this application even if you run out of credit or can’t find Wi-Fi. I’m one of those people who often use Google Maps and downloading offline maps is very useful. We present tips & tricks for using Google’s flagship application offline.

1. How to begin with

1. How to begin with
First you have to open Google Maps while it’s still online and search for the location you want. Once you’ve found the location you want, there are three ways you can download and save the map for later use. Type ‘OK Maps’ in the search field. You can also take advantage of the microphone icon and command by voice by saying ‘OK Maps’. Then a page will appear asking whether you want to download the area in question or not.

2. Download the maps

2. Download the maps
Before saving the corresponding map, you can pan or zoom the size of the map so that it displays all the information you need. Unlike screenshots, offline maps can be enlarged and display information just like online Google maps, such as street names and buildings found there.

3. Open the maps

3. Open the maps
Once you have saved the offline maps to your device, to access them tap the hamburger menu icon located at the top left of the Maps app then select ‘Your places’. Swipe to the bottom of the screen and you can see all the maps you saved in ‘Saved places’. Just tap the map you want to view offline. The map you download takes up quite a bit of storage space. For example, an offline map of New York City will take up 13 MB of space. However, if you’re worried that offline map data downloads will take up a lot of your plan, you might want to use Wi-Fi when downloading the maps.

4. Limitations of offline maps

4. Limitations of offline maps
Unfortunately, offline maps have certain limitations related to their map functionality. Mainly with regards to the size of the location you are looking for. As mentioned earlier. the New York city area for example will consume a lot of cached map data and you will often receive a message if the map in question cannot be downloaded. If you find this case, you’ll need to “break” the maps into smaller pieces, including the surrounding area. Another limitation that you can find is the navigation feature that is not available. Plus the search command in offline maps will not be able to be done. On the other hand, the maps you download will only be stored for 30 days and after that they will be automatically deleted.

Another feature offered by this application is to store home and work addresses. To do this, you can open Google Maps, then press the menu button and select Your Places. Here you will see all things related to Home and Work. You can save both addresses here. Even now you can ask Google Maps to navigate to Home and Work instead of saving the corresponding address.

6. How to get directions quickly

Many of us already know how to navigate our location through voice commands, turn-by-turn directions, but did you know there’s a shortcut for doing it? You can search for the relevant location or touch it on the map. Then touch and press the blue transport button located at the bottom right which displays an image of a car, bicycle, or person. Google Maps will choose the best route and immediately display the navigation mode.

7. How to share your location

To share your location with friends or family, just tap and tap on the location you feel marked by the blue dot. Tap the Dropped pin address or session located at the bottom of the screen to expand it, then tap Share. You will see a list of apps appear in a pop-up where you can share the location.
