Epic Games CEO says Apex Legends doesn't threaten Fortnite directly!

Apex Legends has achieved immense popularity since its release in February has quickly garnered over 50 million players and is among the most streamed games on Twitch. But according to the CEO of Epic Games, Apex Legends doesn’t directly threaten Fortnite.

This comment comes from VentureBeat, which spotted Tim Sweeny this week about the state of Epic Games at this year’s Games Developers Conference.

Sweeney revealed that Fortnite has logged nearly 250 million players with only a slight drop due to Apex Legends.

He said, “We are close to 250 million ‘Fortnite’ players. Since Apex Legends came out, we’ve got about as much as Apex Legends’ total players now, which is great.” Sweeney also added that Fortnite has hit number 1 twice without the need for an event since the release of Apex Legends.

In contrast, Sweeney said Fortnite’s biggest foe came from a different EA title, FIFA. He said, “The only game we can bypass is FIFA. It is one that is played by everyone and is very popular all over the world.”

Here are some facts for you guys. Apex Legends only took a month for the estimated 50 million players while Fortnite took four months for that number.

Sweeney also praised Apex Legends, “for everything they’ve made a difference in the battle royale genre, Apex Legends has rekindled the spirit of many shooter players, and caught the attention of players going in and out of the genre depending on what’s popular.

He continued, “It’s great to see other games choose the battle royale genre, and add their own unique style and advance the state of our industry.”
