Indonesia Leads PC Game Development in Southeast Asia
Mobile is the most popular gaming platform in Indonesia. Many people have cellphones now, and they have automatically entered the growing mobile gaming market. These facts encourage local developers to think more about making mobile games than other platforms. But outside of the mobile platform, there are still many developers who develop games for computers or PCs.
By international standards, there are not too many PC games coming from Southeast Asia. The easiest place to find these games is via Steam, the largest gaming marketplace for this platform. According to data collected by Virtual SEA, there are more than 340 games on Steam that come from Southeast Asian developers. These games include games that have not been and have been released, as well as games that can be played before release or Early Access. A list of these games by country can be found on the Virtual SEA curators page.
Indonesia has released more than 1/3 of the games on this list with a total of 124 games. This position continues after last year where Indonesia also held the first position. No other Southeast Asian country can come close to the number of games released by Indonesia today. The country in second place, Singapore, has 1/3 games lower than Indonesia.
But regardless of the state of the PC gaming industry in Southeast Asia, the more competition the better. Vietnam and Myanmar have stepped into the world of game development, although the amount they spend is still not much. Hopefully the number of developers from these two countries will increase. Apart from the list above, some countries still don’t have any games on Steam. They are Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, and Timor-Leste. The author hopes that they will join with other ASEAN members to develop local games, because the more games that are developed, the better for all gamers.
