Sesmenpora Conveys Indonesia's Response Regarding the Postponement of the 2021 Vietnam SEA Games

Indonesia has objected to Vietnam’s request to postpone the 2021 SEA Games scheduled to take place in December 2021 to the middle of next year, according to an official statement delivered on Thursday (10/6). Host Vietnam cited the country’s recent spike in COVID-19 cases as the main consideration behind the committee’s request to postpone the biennial multi-sport event in the Southeast Asia region.

Reporting from Xinhuanet, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand agreed to continue the Southeast Asian sporting event according to the original schedule, said the Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Sesmenpora) Gatot S. Dewa Broto.

According to Broto, the objections raised are not without reason because there are already many sporting events scheduled for next year, such as the Asian Games in Hangzhou China, the Asian Indoor Martial Arts Games in Bangkok, Thailand, and the Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya, Turkey.

“If the SEA Games are held next year, it will break the concentration of our athletes who are currently training with the assumption that the event schedule will start this December,” he added.

Broto gave an example, postponing the event to next year also means the Indonesian government will need an additional budget of course also for the preparation of the athletes, which at this time may also be in the process.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports does not have a large budget compared to other ministries, so we have to optimize and handle the budget we currently have efficiently,” he added.

“It’s not easy just asking the Ministry of Finance to give us an injection of funds because the state budget is strictly allocated to all ministries depending on the government’s priorities.”

As we know, in addition to conventional sports, the 31st SEA Games will also feature 10 esports sports classes. The decision regarding the certainty of the SEA Games schedule will certainly affect not only the preparation of the esports contingent but also the organization/team and other tournament agendas in the future. Well, we look forward to the development of decisions regarding the Vietnam SEA Games while of course we hope that conditions in the country can continue to improve in overcoming the COVID pandemic so that this biennial sports event can be held as planned.
