The World's Largest Game Cheat Provider Network Revealed!

Authorities claim to have shut down the ‘world’s largest’ provider of video game cheats. The operation that Tencent carried out in collaboration with the police for a year finally succeeded in confiscating and freezing assets worth more than $750 million.

The video game industry has become one of the largest in the world, with hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue and turnover every year. In fact, by 2019, it is estimated that more money will be spent on video games than on global film or the North American sports industry combined. With that premise in mind, it’s no surprise that many hack and cheat providers are starting to appear on the black market taking advantage of the game industry’s phenomenal growth and success.

Cheat or cheating service “services” are commonly used to gain a competitive edge in some MMO (online multiplayer) games or even gain access to high value content for only spending less than the set price. Now it seems that the publishers and game developers are starting to fight back. One of the world’s largest gaming companies, Tencent, has teamed up with a special police unit to carry out an operation to ensnare the “world’s largest” network of video game cheaters that authorities have ever discovered and investigated.

Tencent first reported the activity of the cheat provider to Chinese police in March last year. Since then they have started working with the police to track down the network. From multiple operations, members of the group are reported to have made as much as $10,000 a day; with more than $764 million raised in before some were caught and eventually brought to justice. Most of the money comes from selling cheats for mobile (mobile) games, although the group also caters to players of popular games like Overwatch and Valorant. After a year-long investigation, the defendants have now been sentenced to prison terms and their assets have been confiscated.

The Kunshan Police found cash, millions of dollars worth of luxury vehicles and $46 million worth of cryptocurrency (virtual currency) in a series of arrests a few days ago. At the press conference held, the command center praised the work of the investigative unit, thanked Tencent for help, and promised to “continue to work hard to protect the gaming environment.”

The success of the operation to capture a network of cheat service providers is great news for the gaming industry. However, on the other hand, game developers and publishers in the Western world may still not get this level of support from the authorities. So far, game vendors in the US and European regions have independently faced hackers and cheaters in the game, where the ability of cheaters is increasing from time to time. With new hacks and exploits popping up almost every day, game developers and publishers feel as though they are facing a battle that will never be won.
