We Asked Fans Are Interested In Buying Nintendo Switch OLED Or Not...
Coming as one of the most horrendous surprises in the gaming industry over the past week, the announcement of the Nintendo Switch OLED model is still attracting attention and question marks from fans. The console doesn’t bring the performance upgrades and overhauls to the Joy-Con controllers that people complain about, but that doesn’t just stop Nintendo from making big profits, especially from its community base, which is very loyal and willing to spend big money even for small content.
Driven by curiosity, GamerWK together with some of our media partners at GamerBraves, Casual Gamer, and Wanuxi opened a survey for one day yesterday to see what fans think about the Nintendo Switch OLED. In this survey we asked about their current status whether they have a Switch or not, whether they will upgrade / buy, to what their hopes are if there is a new console release in the future.
This survey mostly focuses on the fan base in Malaysia and Indonesia. The response we got was quite a lot with results that were quite unexpected as well.
What about the Survey Results?
Judging from the results we got, it turns out that most of the fans (53.4%) are not interested in the Nintendo Switch OLED. This option is only for those who already have a Switch, so in this sense they are not not not interested in buying but not interested in upgrading. A very understandable decision, especially since there hasn’t been much of a significant overhaul apart from the 7-Inch OLED screen and other minor features, not to mention the console’s potentially inflated price tag.
The second highest result is also quite surprising where as many as 17.7% of them do not have a Switch and are not interested in buying an OLED model. This is a result that is beyond our predictions, as it is technically the best version to come by. Our prediction is that they may not be interested because systems that use OLED screens can be prone to burn-in problems, aka not durable in the long term. While the results of the third and fourth polls are the opposite, which fans claim to be interested in upgrading or buying.
Not to forget, we also tried to ask Nintendo Switch Lite users about their interest in upgrading to the OLED model. This poll option received responses from 115 people, and 72.2% of them said they were not interested in buying the console, while 27.8% were interested in switching to the new model. Again, this result doesn’t surprise us because technically the Lite and OLED versions don’t have any differences in terms of specifications. Apart from the absence of the dock, the Joy-Con configuration between fused and removable, and the quality of the screen, both consoles can basically run games at the same performance quality. So maybe they don’t want to spend extra money just for a console that doesn’t live up to their expectations
Looking at the survey results we got, it’s easy to see the disappointment and lack of interest in switching to the OLED Switch. But it’s also worth noting that this isn’t the first time Nintendo has faced this kind of situation, because they’ve also released a 3DS model with a larger size without any other changes. And the result? The console is still selling very well. The reason behind the high enthusiasm of fans for this new Switch release is because they have been carried away by rumors circulating from many sources, but in the end the facts obtained are different from reality.
Interest, Critique and Enter
Of course, although most of the responses from fans tend to be disinterested, in fact there are still many who express their interest. From some of the comments that we have noticed, it seems that upgrading the 7-Inch OLED screen is an inviting selling point for them. Longer battery life is also a plus point, especially for those who like to play the game in handheld mode. For owners of the old version of the Switch, the option to upgrade or buy an OLED model is indeed a choice that feels natural, because we ourselves are also among consumers like this.
Most of the criticisms we’ve noticed revolved around performance, and how many of them were disappointed that this meant Switch games couldn’t be played at stable fps and higher screen resolutions. Other criticisms also relate to the Joy-Con controller options that are still the same as the old version, which means they will still be haunted by the possibility of drifting problems or games that like to move independently of the player’s control.
We admit that we like most of the input given by fans, because they really know the best priorities in order to maximize the experience of playing on Switch. Some of these inputs include an innards / performance upgrade to support stable 4K and 60fps resolutions, an overhaul of the Joy-Con quality so that it is not easily damaged, as well as modifying the system itself to make it more beautiful to look at to include the option to record gameplay longer than 30 seconds (yes, pls !!).
Conclusion
Looking at the results we got from the short survey above, it can be said that there are many who are dissatisfied with the Nintendo Switch OLED for several reasons. Apart from the absence of the expected performance overhaul, Nintendo has also not put more effort into bringing improvements and features that fans have been complaining about for a long time. We are sure that they must be aware of the response from the community over the last few years, but in the end this is a path that is considered more practical and will still bring great benefits, which we have to admit will indeed be the real scenario in the future.
Despite the lack of a super significant overhaul it brings, the Nintendo Switch OLED is technically still the best version to get. It’s just that we prefer people who don’t have a Switch at all to take a look, because for those who already have one, they might end up disappointed, because yes…there’s nothing really extraordinary.…
Then what about those who are really interested? Of course there is no problem, because in the end it all depends on each other’s decisions. Also keep in mind that rumors about the Switch Pro are not completely gone because of this OLED Switch. The reason is because Nintendo may be preparing the release of the new model for future plans. So for those of you who are already itching and want to buy an OLED Switch when it is available later, our advice is to look at the situation in the future, especially for those of you who are really complaining about the lack of performance upgrades.
