Dark Dreams Don’t Die (D4) is an oasis for gamers who like to play an eccentric detective tasked with solving various mysteries. D4 uses a classic mystery game recipe: someone who investigates the death of a loved one. Here a young detective named David Young attempts to solve the mystery of his wife’s unnatural disappearance, led by a single “Look for D” clue. Uniquely, David has the ability to return to the past which directly becomes an interesting spice in Dark Dreams Don’t Die. But for that, David must use certain objects called Memento, to “jump” to a time in the past related to the Memento he uses.

D4 carries an episodic format which, when it was launched last June, only had one season which can be said to be very short. But these shortcomings do not determine the fun of the game. Here you will spend most of your time talking to certain people who are related to the mystery that must be solved. Overall, the gameplay in Dark Dreams Don’t Die is similar to the adventure games released by Telltale, such as The Walking Dead. In addition to following the main storyline, you can also take part in side missions such as playing mini games, changing the appearance of characters, and so on.

Another thing that keeps the gameplay interesting is the presence of stamina, life, and concentration that can be drained. In other words, before doing activities, you must first pay attention to which foods, drinks, and drugs can increase your character’s stamina, concentration and life. You will also meet interesting characters, such as the flamboyant Roland Walker with a slow and lilting style of speech. If you want more in-depth information and extra money to upgrade your appearance, you can further research the characters you meet along the way. One way is to point the pointer to their clothes in more detail.

This first episode is linear with eye-catching graphics, where each object and character is rendered in 3D with a unique polish. When you use detective vision mode, you can find various objects and people to interact with so that you can get new clues quickly. In addition to a compelling visual appearance, D4 also uses a background music that is no less interesting. Throughout the game you will be accompanied by jazz music that is serene to your ears. The music behind the story also varies depending on the scene you are doing.

D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die presents an experience that not only arouses our curiosity about the answer to the mystery at hand, but also the diversity of personalities of each character that is interesting for us to meet throughout the game. It must be admitted that D4 is far from perfect, especially when it comes to the duration of the game and the nuances of mystery adventure, which are not much different from other similar themed games. But these two things are not the reason that Dark Dreams Don’t Die is not worth playing, because D4 has its own uniqueness that deserves our thumbs up.
