UC Irvine Campus Offers Scholarships for League of Legend Players
The University of California, Irvine (UCI) became the first campus in the United States to offer a scholarship program for students who are good at playing the game League of Legend. Recently, UCI opened an esports arena covering an area of 3500 square meters located within its campus.
Named the iBUYPOWER esports arena, the place which is also the headquarters of the UC Irvine esports team to practice is also equipped with 80 computers with the highest specs today. Earlier in the year, UCI had selected 5 students who had the skills to play the League of Legend game and had good academic grades to receive a $15,000 scholarship.
And now UCI plans to recruit 5 more students to be part of the campus League of Legend team, so there are a total of 2 teams consisting of 10 people. UCI sees the current development of esports as a lifestyle, cultural phenomenon and big business.
Aware of the positives of playing competitive games, the faculty at the campus will also let their students explore their passion for gaming outside of class hours and study sessions. UC Irvine’s LoL team is currently competing with teams from other top universities in the California area such as UCLA, USC and Cal Poly Pomona.
