summary of the story

Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild tells the story of Aiden, a remote Timben villager who dreams of becoming a Hunter. One day, he came face to face with a monster known as Velocidrome and tries to kill him, but Aiden is saved by Julius and tells him the tracks he found do not belong to the monster. The opposite is a trap set by a Melynx.

Aiden then attack Melynx’s hideout and met Nox, he was also surprised because the monster was able to talk and was rather agile, but was still hit by the trap he had set himself. Aiden took Nox to the village with the stolen goods, there he also met Julius who was talk to Elder Daazel about Elder Dragon Lunastra’s migration path. Julius gave a warning to the residents of Timben, but they don’t believe him because he’s just an outsider. Aiden volunteered to follow Julius and take Nox as witness about the impending disaster they’re in a week away.

Throughout their journey, Julius teaches Aiden his Hunter skills and knowledge as well as mgift new armor suit to protect it from monster attacks. They managed to find Lunastra’s imprint through the destruction of the flames it generates, and Julius explains to Aiden if he doesn’t come home to warn Timben, then everyone will die!

While returning to Timben, they met Mae who is studying Nerscylla and was attacked by the monster. After successfully defeating Nerscylla as a result of Nadia’s help, they agreed to save the village of the impending attack. Aiden also returned Mae’s journal and made him want to join the troops because he wanted to study Lunastra.

The five of them met up with Ravi at his workshop, and Julius remembered a The Hunter who once defected from the Guild’s grip for hunting monsters at will. Ravi accompanies the squad and want to kill Lunastra to seek forgiveness for himself, and build some weapons for them.

When Lunastra began to attack Timben, the main weapon against the monster had undergone damage from the resulting fire. To give Mae and Aiden time to mend it, Ravi has taken action dealing alone with Lunastra to distract him. When they manage to shoot the monster with their repaired weapons, Mae tries to save one of the villagers but is attacked by the awakened Lunastra.

Because Nadia’s weapon had a problem, Aiden has gone to the pond and exploded so that Lunastra was carried away by the river. The battle was over and the village of Timben was successfully saved by the Hunter’s Guild troops. However, Lunastra might come back again because he just drifted away with the current and didn’t die from it.

Brief review of the film with some spoilers!

In terms of graphics, I need to give credit to Pure Imagination Studio because they have succeeded in producing Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild with beautiful visuals. Although it’s not as great as the latest animation, but picture of nature, the precision of every monster in the film and character battle action with monsters successfully delivered beautifully.

In terms of storyline too, it’s a bit short because it took less than an hour to reach the end of the story. Honestly, I’m not satisfied with this film because it lacking a great battle round between characters and monsters. In fact, while they were explaining about the migration of the Elder Dragons, I imagine this story will feature at least a fight between two or three monsters of that class, but only Lunastra exists. Maybe if the director provides a pair of Lunastra, namely Teostra in this film it will definitely make the final round of the fight even more epic!

In terms of character presentation, even though we see Aiden as the main character, overall this film is him looks like it’s not working because he was not armed with weapons and there was no great way he beat Lunastra. Aiden’s scene only really helps in this film only when he pops the dam so that Lunastra is carried away by the current. Maybe after watching this film, you will think Julius is the main character because he has many rounds of fighting with monsters.

One thing I noticed about side characters like Mae, Nadia and Ravi is that they are really helps the main character in the mission to save Timben from the Lunastra attack. Nadia too show his skills using heavy bowgunner during the fight with Congalala, Deviljho and Lunastra which for me is very stylish! In fact, if you want to compare Ravi’s character who only appeared for less than five minutes with Aiden, I may say Ravi again works from it.

Suitable to be served on weekends

Overall, this film suitable for those who are not from among the Monster Hunter fans and the audience who want to watch a light story and not so complicated. Maybe after watching this film, you will definitely want to see other great monsters to arrive because Lunastra’s appearance alone is not enough to make it called as a great animated film. The cinematography of the film is not too heavy either, so you can watch Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild with your family and partner on the weekends.

That’s all for my review of this film! If interested, you can just watch Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild on Netflix now! You can also read our reviews of other Netflix animations like Godzilla Singular Point and Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway.
